How to compress your images
- Add the photos. As many as you like, in one go.
- Choose how much to compress. Light keeps the most detail.
- Press Compress the images.
- Download them, one at a time or all together as a .zip.
Lighter, not smaller
The dimensions in pixels do not change. Only the amount of data used to describe them does.
Many tools quietly resize your photos to make the numbers look good, and you find out when you print one. Here a 4000-pixel-wide photo stays 4000 pixels wide: what changes is how efficiently those pixels are stored.
The hidden data goes too
Recompressing rewrites the file, so the metadata of the original is not carried across — including the location where the photo was taken.
Photos from a phone routinely carry coordinates, a timestamp and the device model. Most people do not know, and most sharing does not need any of it. Worth knowing in both directions: it means the file you send is quieter, and it means you should keep the original if that information matters to you.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The compression happens in your browser, on your own device.
Do the photos get smaller in pixels?
No. The dimensions stay exactly as they were; only the file weight changes.
Is the location really removed?
Yes. The image is rewritten, so the metadata of the original — location, time, device — does not come across.
Can I compress many photos at once?
Yes, and you can download them all together as a .zip.
