PDF to Word without uploading the document

An editable document with your text in it. Headings, paragraphs and reading order survive; columns, tables and precise layout do not — and we would rather say so first.

How to convert a PDF into a Word document

  1. Choose the document. Drag it into the area above or click to pick it.
  2. Press Convert to Word. The text is read and rebuilt.
  3. Download the .docx and open it wherever you like.
  4. Expect to tidy the layout, not to retype the words.

What survives, and what does not

The words, the paragraphs and the reading order survive. Columns, tables and exact positioning do not.

A PDF describes where marks sit on a page, not what they mean. Rebuilding «this is a heading, this is a paragraph» from coordinates works well for ordinary documents and badly for complex ones. This tool aims at the first case and tells you about the second, instead of promising a conversion that would disappoint you at the worst moment.

Scanned documents will not work

A scan is an image of text. There is nothing to extract, and the tool says so.

Getting text out of a picture needs optical character recognition, which this site does not do. Rather than return an empty document, the tool recognises the case and tells you what you are holding — a scan, not a text document.

Frequently asked questions

Is the document uploaded to a server?

No. The text is extracted and the .docx is written in your browser, on your own device.

Will the result look like the original?

Not exactly. You get the text, structured into headings and paragraphs; the visual layout of the original is not reproduced.

Do images come across?

No. The conversion is about the text: images in the PDF are not carried into the Word document.

Why does my scanned PDF produce nothing?

Because it contains images of text rather than text. Without optical character recognition there is nothing to extract, and the tool tells you rather than returning an empty file.
