Unlock PDF without uploading the document

Two different locks, two different answers. If you know the password it comes off; if the file only blocks printing and copying, that comes off too.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Choose the document. Drag it into the area above or click to pick it.
  2. Type the password if there is one. Leave the field empty if the file opens without asking.
  3. Press Unlock PDF.
  4. Download the document, now without its lock.

Two locks that look the same and are not

One stops the file opening. The other lets it open but forbids printing and copying.

The second is the common case, and the confusing one: the document opens straight away, so it does not feel locked — until you try to print it. That is why the password field can be left empty. There is nothing to type, because there is no password to open it with.

What this tool will not do

It will not guess a password you do not have, and it will not try to break one.

If a document is encrypted and you do not know its password, there is no way in — not here and not anywhere honest. The tool says so plainly rather than leaving you to wonder whether a longer wait would help.

Frequently asked questions

Is the document uploaded to a server?

No. The unlocking happens in your browser, on your own device, and the password never leaves it.

Why can I leave the password field empty?

Because many locked files are not password protected at all: they open normally and only forbid printing and copying. For those, there is no password to enter.

Where does the password I type go?

Nowhere. It lives in the page while you use it and disappears when you close the tab. It is not stored in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Can it open a document whose password I lost?

No. Without the correct password the document cannot be opened, and we neither guess nor force it.
